Myths About Domestic Violence
Lawanna Lynn Campbell endured a marriage full of domestic violence, infidelity, crack cocaine addiction, and alcohol abuse. When she was told to keep silent about being abused by her husband, she took matters into her own hands. After 23 years, she eventually escaped and made a new life for herself. Below, Campbell discusses the myths surrounding domestic abuse and their impact as she struggled to break free from a life of pain, shame, and guilt. MYTH Boyfriends and girlfriends sometimes push each other around when they get angry, but it rarely results in anyone getting seriously hurt. When I was 17, my boyfriend went for my throat and choked me in a fit of jealous rage upon learning that I had dated others before we became exclusive. I thought this was an involuntary reflex he could not control. I believed that his outburst showed just how much he really loved me and wanted me for himself. I quickly forgave him after he apologized, and in some morbid way, felt flattered to be loved so much. I later found out that he was very much in control of his actions. He knew exactly what he was doing. People who abuse often use a series of tactics besides violence including threats, intimidation, psychological abuse and isolation to control their partners. And if it happened once it would happen again. And sure enough, that incident was only the beginning of more acts of violence that led to serious injuries throughout our years together. FACT As many as one-third of all high school and college-age young people experience violence in an intimate or dating relationship. Physical abuseà is as common among high school and college-age couples as married couples. Domestic violence is the number one cause of injury to women between the ages of 15-44 in the U.S. ââ¬â more than car accidents, muggings and rapes combined. And, of the women murdered each year in the U.S., 30% are killed by their current or former husband or boyfriend. MYTH Most people will end a relationship if their boyfriend or girlfriend hits them. After that first incident of abuse, I believed that my boyfriend was truly sorry and that he wouldnââ¬â¢t ever hit me again. I rationalized that it was only this one time. After all, couples often have arguments and fights that are forgiven and forgotten. My parents fought all the time, and I believed that behavior was normal and unavoidable in marriage. My boyfriend would buy me things, take me out, and show me attention and affection in an effort to prove his sincerity, and he promised that he would never hit me again. This is called ââ¬Å"the honeymoonâ⬠phase. I believed the lie and within months I married him. FACT Nearly 80% of girls who have been physically abused in their intimate relationships continue to date their abuser after the onset of violence. MYTH If a person is really being abused, itââ¬â¢s easy to just leave. It was extremely complicated and difficult for me to leave my abuser, and there were several factors that delayed and hindered my decision to get away from him. I had a strong religious background and believed it was my obligation to forgive him and to submit to his authority as my husband. This belief kept me living in an abusive marriage. I also believed that even though we werenââ¬â¢t fighting all the time, it really wasnââ¬â¢t that bad. He owned a business, and at one point, was the pastor of a church. We were prosperous, had a beautiful home, drove nice cars, and I enjoyed the status of being the perfect middle-class family. And so, for the sake of money and status, I stayed. Another reason why I stayed was for the sake of the children. I didnââ¬â¢t want my children to be psychologically damaged coming from a broken home. I had been psychologically and emotionally abused for so long that I developed low self-esteem and had a low self-image. He consistently reminded me that no one else would ever love me like he did and that I shouldââ¬â¢ve been glad that he married me in the first place. He would belittle my physical characteristics and remind me of my shortcomings and faults. I often went along with whatever my husband wanted to do just to avoid a fight and to avoid being left alone. I had my own guilt issues and believed that I was being punished and deserved the misfortune that happened to me. I believed that I could not survive without my husband and was afraid of being homeless and destitute. And even after I left the marriage, I was stalked and almost killed by him. This type of psychological abuse is often ignored by the victims of domestic violence. Since there are no visible scars we think weââ¬â¢re okay, but in fact, the psychological and emotional torments are the ones that have the most lasting impact on our lives even long after the abuser is out of our lives. FACT There are many complicated reasons why itââ¬â¢s difficult for a person to leave an abusive partner. One common reason is fear. Women who leave abusers are at a 75% greater chance of being killed by the abuser than those who stay. Most people who are abused often blame themselves for causing the violence. No one is ever to blame for another personââ¬â¢s violence. Violence is always a choice, and the responsibility is 100% with the person who is violent. It is my desire that we become educated about the warning signs of domestic abuse and encourage women to break the cycle of abuse by breaking the silence. The arts began to focus on this world and human life vice the more religious focus of the Medieval period. The Artist About the Artist Leonardo DaVinci was born in Florence on April 15, 1452. He was the illegitimate son of a lawyer and a woman believed to be a servant in DaVinciââ¬â¢s grandparentââ¬â¢s house. ââ¬Å"He was sent to be the apprentice to Amdrea del Verrocchio, one of the foremost artists in Florenceâ⬠(Plumb, 1961). He finished his apprenticeship in 1472; however, he stayed in Florence for another ten years. Not only was Da Vinci interested in the arts, he was also interested in mathematics and mechanics. He was especially interested in how living things moved (Plumb, 1961). In 1482, he left Florence and spent the next 20 years in Milan. Milan offered him more that he felt he could receive in Florence. Da Vinci dies at Amboise on May 2, 1519. Principles of Leonardo Da Vinci on Painting Leonardo felt that ââ¬Å"the mind of a painter should be like a mirror which lways takes the colour of the thing that it reflects, and which is filled by as many images as there are things placed before itâ⬠(MacCurdy, n. d. ). He believed that when looking at something to paint, the artist should look at each object individually and take that object into the mind with all its details. Da Vinci felt that painting included ten attributes of sight. They included: darkness, brightness, substance and color, form and place, remoteness and nearness, and movement and rest (MacCurdy, n. d). In order to paint with greatness, an artist had to use these ten attributes to construct their painting. In order to paint a figure of a person, Da Vinci felt that the eye of the figure he was painting should be level with the artist. This prevented the figure from being too high or low, which would cause the portrait not to resemble the person or figure being painted. Influence of the philosophy on the artist ââ¬Å"Leonardo was one of the first men in whom the Renaissance expressed itself in a new way, not as a recovery but as a discoveryâ⬠(Plumb, 1961). Leonardo believed that art and science went hand in hand. He experimented with colors to slow drying time, giving more time to paint details in the painting. Because the Renaissance believed in the individual, Leonardo would incorporate into his paintings, more realistic objects. The individuals were painted to resemble the more human form and his background/nature was painted to look more realistic. According to Levinger, 1962, ââ¬Å"yet the trees that waved in the background could have grown from no earthly soil. â⬠These details were all part of the humanism movement that was coming about in the Renaissance era. Influence of the artist on other artists Leonardo Da Vinci invented new painting techniques. The chiaroscuro technique is the use of contrasting light and dark in paintings. This allows for more depth in a painting. This technique is used frequently today by graphic novelists and in cinematography. The other technique that DaVinci invented is the sfumato technique. This is also known as atmospheric haze. This technique was used in the Mona Lisa painting and is what makes this painting so mysterious (Gray, 2007). Leonardo used his knowledge of anatomy in his art, allowing him to paint more realistic people. Other artists studied this technique and they too began painting more realistic people as well. Many artists respected and admired the use of realism of the human body and nature that Da Vinci used. Works of Art The works of art that Leonardo left behind are very few. He never completed a statue and has only about a dozen finished paintings. He left behind many anatomical and mechanical drawing and thousands of sketches (Plumb, 1961). His two most famous paintings are the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper. Some of his less famous paintings include The Adoration of the Magi, The Virgin of the Rocks, and Madonna and Child with Saint Anne. The Last Supper It is believed that The Last Supper was painted between 1495 and 1497 by the request of Ludovico. Because all documents of the commission are missing these dates are formulated using his manuscripts and drawings. The Last Supper was painted in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan (Pedretti, 2004). Due to Da Vinci painting the Last Supper with egg tempera and oil on a damp wall, it soon began to deteriorate and has continued to do so over the years. There have been several attempts to conserve this painting. The Last Supper is one of the most copied of all times. Aesthetic analysis The Last Supper was painted by Da Vinci according to the Gospels in the Scriptures (Pedretti, 2000). He was able to cause the room the Last Supper was taking place in to look as if it were an extension of the refectory where the monks ate their meals. He achieved this due to his mastery of geometry and use of visual paradoxes (Capra, 2007). Everything in the painting of the Last Supper is arranged so that the main focus is in Jesus. Leonardo places Judas on the same side of the table as Jesus. This is part of the humanism belief. He places the disciples in groups of three. Again this is to put the main focus on Jesus. Another difference in Da Vinciââ¬â¢s Last Supper and other artists version is Da Vinci painted everyone without halos. This again was to show that everyone was human and to not point out Judas as being different. He also incorporated emotional reaction on each apostleââ¬â¢s face in regards to Christââ¬â¢s announcement that someone at the table would betray him. He was able to vary the reaction on each apostleââ¬â¢s face. By placing the disciples in groups, this detail is more noticeable. All the people are depicted as real people. This had not been done in early versions of The Last Supper. Leonardo would visit places where he knew people would be that would suit the type of individual he wanted to paint. He would then watch everyone until he found what he was looking for and then sketch them in his notebook to copy to his painting. He even went as far as bringing in models to his studio to copy and paint, making his figures more lifelike (Vallentin, 1938). Conclusion Leonardo was a great man of the Renaissance period. Although he did not leave behind many paintings, the ones that he did leave were great. In addition to his paintings, he was also very knowledgeable and made considerable contributions in other areas such as anatomy, mathematics, and astronomy. His influence on artists of the Renaissance period changed the say that paintings were completed. Without his influence and all his contributions in other areas, what we know in many of these areas today, would not be the same. References Capra, F. (2007). The science of Leonardo. She was the youngest of four children; she had a brother, Willem, and two sisters, Nollie and Betsie.à A brother Hendrik Jan died in infancy. Corrieââ¬â¢s grandfather, Willem ten Boom, opened a watchmakerââ¬â¢s shop in Haarlem in 1837. In 1844, he began a weekly prayer service to pray for the Jewish people, who even then experienced discrimination in Europe. When Willemââ¬â¢s son Casper inherited the business, Casper continued that tradition. Corrieââ¬â¢s mother, Cornelia, died in 1921. The family lived on the second floor, above the shop. Corrie ten Boom apprenticed as a watchmaker and in 1922 was named the first womanà to be licensed as a watchmaker in Holland. Over the years, the ten Booms took care of many refugee children and orphans. Corrie taught Bible classes and Sunday school and was active in organizing Christian clubs for Dutch children. Creating a Hideout During the German blitzkrieg across Europe in May 1940,à tanks and soldiers invaded the Netherlands. Corrie, who was 48 at the time, was determined to help her people, so she turned their home into a safe haven for people trying to escape the Nazis. Dutch resistance members carried grandfather clocks into the watch shop. Hidden inside the long clock cases were bricks and mortar, which they used to build a false wall and hidden room in Corrieââ¬â¢s bedroom. Although it was only about two feet deep by eight feet long, this hiding place could hold six or seven people: Jews or members of the Dutch underground. The ten Booms installed a warning buzzer to signal their guests to hide, whenever the Gestapo (secret police) were searching the neighborhood. The hideout worked well for nearly four years because people were constantly coming and going through the busy watch repair shop. But on February 28, 1944, an informant betrayed the operation to the Gestapo. Thirty people, including several of the ten Boom family, were arrested. However, the Nazis failed to find the six people hiding in the secret room. They were rescued two days later by the Dutch resistance movement. Prison Meant Death Corrieââ¬â¢s father Casper, then aged 84, was taken to Scheveningen Prison. He died ten days later. Corrieââ¬â¢s brother Willem, a Dutch Reformed minister, was released thanks to a sympathetic judge. Sister Nollie was also released. Over the next ten months, Corrie and her sister Betsie were shuttled from Scheveningen to Vugt concentration camp in the Netherlands, finally ending in Ravensbruck concentration camp near Berlin, the largest camp for women in German-controlled territories. The prisoners were used for forced labor in farm projects and armament factories. Thousands of women were executed there. Living conditions were brutal, with meager rations and harsh discipline. Even so, Betsie and Corrie conducted secret prayer services in their barracks, using a smuggled Dutch Bible. The women voiced prayers and hymns in whispers to avoid the attention of the guards.à On December 16, 1944, Betsie died at Ravensbruck of starvation and lack of medical care. Corrie later recounted the following lines as Betsies last words: â⬠¦ (we) must tell them what we have learned here. We must tell them that there is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still. They will listen to us, Corrie, because we have been here.â⬠Two weeks after Betsies death, ten Boom was released from the camp due to claims of a clerical error. Ten Boomà often called this occurrence a miracle. Shortly after ten Booms release, all of the other women in her age group at Ravensbruck were executed.à Post-War Ministry Corrie traveled back to Groningen in the Netherlands, where she recuperated in a convalescent home. A truck took her to her brother Willemââ¬â¢s home in Hilversum, and he arranged for her to go to the family home in Haarlem. In May 1945, she rented a house in Bloemendaal, which she converted into a home forà concentration camp survivors, fellow wartime resistance collaborators, and the disabled. She also set up a nonprofit organization in the Netherlands to support the home and her ministry.à In 1946, ten Boom boarded a freighter for the United States. Once there, she began speaking at Bible classes, churches, and Christian conferences. Throughout 1947, she spoke extensively in Europe and became affiliated with Youth for Christ. It was at a YFC world congress in 1948 that she met Billy Graham and Cliff Barrows. Graham would later play a major role in making her known to the world. From the 1950s through the 1970s, Corrie ten Boom traveled to 64 countries, speaking and preaching about Jesus Christ.à Her 1971 book, The Hiding Place, became a best-seller. In 1975, World Wide Pictures, the film branch of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, released a movie version, withà Jeannette Clift George in the role of Corrie. Later Life Queen Julianna of the Netherlands made ten Boom a knight in 1962. In 1968, she was asked to plant a tree at the Garden of the Righteous Among the Nations, at the Holocaust Memorial in Israel. Gordon College in the United States awarded her an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters in 1976. As her health deteriorated, Corrie settled in Placentia, California in 1977. She received resident alien statusà but curtailed her travel after pacemaker surgery. The next year she suffered the first of several strokes, which reduced her ability to talk and get around by herself. Corrie ten Boom died on her 91st birthday, April 15, 1983. Sheà was buried at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, California. Legacy From the time she was released fromà Ravensbruck until illness ended her ministry, Corrie ten Boom reached millions of people throughout the world with the message of the gospel. The Hiding Place remains a popular and impactful book, and ten Booms teachings onà forgiveness continue to resonate. Films and Filming - Essay Example On the other hand cinema is making the viewer believe that the train coming towards him is real, making the unreal look real. These two qualities of Cinema led to the division of cinema into documentaries and feature films. Of these the feature films or story telling films developed into the commercial cinema or the mainstream cinema. The revolt against the commercialization of the art of cinema led to the emergence of the experimental cinema. Side by side with these the documentary cinema existed as one of the greatest traditions of cinema. This paper examines Hollywood Cinema as a model of Commercial cinema or the main stream cinema. The French New wave film movement, with Jean Luc Godard and his film Breathless will be analyzed as an example for the experimental cinema. HOLLYWOOD: Hollywood, in Los Angeles, California is all about stars and glitter. The area now known as Hollywood was sparsely populated in the seventeenth century when the Spanish explorers entered there .Santa Mon ica Mountains towered over the area and in the canyons of these mountains lived the Native Americans. By 1870s the area was a flourishing agricultural area, with crops like hay and grain, bananas and pine apple. In 1910, film maker D.W. Griffith working for Biograph Company, came to Downtown Los Angeles, and with his acting troop to shoot films. Thus it was Griffith who shot the first ever movie in Hollywood, then without a studio. The film was called ââ¬Å"In Old Californiaâ⬠. It was a Biograph melodrama.

The Use of Punctuation Marks in the Writing of Libyan Students Essay
ââ¬Å"Punctuation marks are the main means of showing the grammatical organisation of what you write. Hide the punctuation and you hide the grammatical structure. And if you hide the grammatical structure, you hide the meaning of what you are trying to say.â⬠Crystal (1996:151) maintains. As punctuation is relevant to and necessary to grammar (as above quotation states), a significant cause of EFL learner and Arab EFL writer low punctuation proficiency is the incorrect application of rules (Al-Jarf, 2001). He points out, the incorrect application of rules caused by: 1) failure to master the operational or transformational component of a rule; and 2) failure to learn a rules domain of applicability (p.16). According to Mohammed (2006), EFL learners who are unable to write in complete sentence, and constantly appear to have difficulty with understanding the concept of a sentence; their writing contains unconventional punctuation as a result. Mann (2003) believes that one should be familiar with sentence boundaries in order to punctuate correctly; moreover, he points out that to begin and end sentences is one of some difficulties learners face when they start to write. As the construction of sentence varies from one language to another, such variations may result in writing in incomplete sentence and then inappropriate use of punctuation. A simple sentence is ââ¬Å"an independent clause expressing one ideaâ⬠(Al-Khresheh 2010, p. 106), ââ¬Å"a syntactic unit which contains a finite verbâ⬠(Fischer 1984, p. 15, cited in Polio 1997, p. 107), comprised of one subject-verb combination, though the subject may be compound and thus making up a clause with ââ¬Å"more than one constituentâ⬠(Al-Khresheh 2010, p. 106). These features describe the English s... ...Oââ¬â¢Grady, et al. 1996, cited in Al-Khresheh 2010, p. 106). Othman (2007) posits the differences in Arabic subordinate clauses at the helm of the differences and the cause of the impact to punctuating in English writing. Othman (2007) has conducted a study in which he has attempted to find out how subordination and coordination are commonly used in Arabic and English texts. He concludes: subordination is seen as a sign of maturity and sophistication in English writing, whereas coordination is more commonly used in Arabic writing. As Mohamed and Omer (1999) also conclude, these differences, like those in coordination efforts, manifest in several ways: Arabic subordinate clauses are semantically subordinate, but are syntactically capable equal to their main clauses, just like their main independent clauses, of acting independently as separate sentencesâ⬠(p. 293).

Raising Minimum Wage Essay
Corona English 1B 04/11/13 I want to start off by telling you a little bit about Ms. Criswell she works full time, with no benefits, and she hasnââ¬â¢t had a raise in three years. After taxes, she brings home $1,030 a month ââ¬â enough, if sheââ¬â¢s careful, to meet her expenses, with little wiggle room. ââ¬Å"What I feel,â⬠she says, ââ¬Å"is anxiety. I felt it just this morning. Itââ¬â¢s constantly in the back of my mind: ââ¬ËAm I going to have enough to pay the bills? ââ¬Ëâ⬠She grows what food she can and buys items that can be stretched out to multiple meals. To live with the concern of whether or not she will be able to keep her home and feed herself shouldnââ¬â¢t be an issue for anyone. They are programs to help starving children in foreign countries then maybe the government should stop and look at whats happening in America. We cant say Ms. Criswell is lazy and doesnââ¬â¢t want to work, so how else can she bring home more income if she is limited to what is available. If minimum wage was to be increased, this would allow people to bring home more income and there are concerns and I will address them in the following. According to minimum-wage. rg, a full time minimum wage worker in California working 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, will earn $64. 00 per day, $320. 00 per week, and $16,640. 00 per year. The national poverty line for a family unit consisting of two people is $14,570 per year. This doesnââ¬â¢t give much room for emergencies or health complications or even extra money to put away in a savings account, most fami lies live paycheck to paycheck. With rising gas prices and rent, theres no doubt that a bigger pay check can substancially lower the risk of going bank rupt or putting the health and well being of your child in danger. Cost of living has risen since the last time minimum wage was raised and therefore calls for a raise in the near future. I agree on raising minimum wage for a few reasons. Big corporations are making an enormous amount of money, they should be able to compensate their employees at a decent rate. In California, the minimum wage is considered $8. 00 an hour but is not limited to paying a new employee under 20 a minimum wage of $4. 25 for the first 90 days, or paying a full-time high school or college students working part time to be paid $6. 80 an hour. This is completely legal and it is to the discretion of the employer to determine the final wage. With companies are making thousands of dollars you would think they would be able to compensate their employees at a higher wage. If companies could increase an employeeââ¬â¢s salary, that means the employee can take home a bigger check which can turn out to be a good thing. Now more money is coming in, the more they can spend on items that will in return create more jobs to supply the increase of demanded items. Now, I know ââ¬Å"more money means more spendingâ⬠may seem like a bad thing Cost of living is an issue when the ideal living situation isnââ¬â¢t customized to every family More money coming into the house hold can mean money spent on items and in favor create more jobs to meet the demand. Those who oppose an increase to the minimum wage, however, argue that the effects on employment rates would be exactly the opposite of those supporters expect. A higher minimum wage, would be too heavy a burden on employers. We can see this being an issue with small business owners and those employers, in turn, would be unable to hire as many people. I understand that small business will have an issue hiring more people if the minimum wage is raised but on the other hand raising minimum wage will motivate people to go out and provide for themselves thus lowering unemployment rates. If minimum wage is applied inconsistently then it does seem unfair to a person living in a different state with a much lower minimum wage, but we also have to give account to the cost of living in that particular state. Rent, food, bills, etc. , maybe be higher or depending on what state the person resides

Dr. Hale Williams Accomplishments - 901 Words
After the death of one of the most prominent doctors in history, Dr. Dan Hale Williams, many expressed their thoughts and sorrow through a series of eulogies that were published in 1931 by the Chicago Defender. The publication was meant to recognize Dr. Williamââ¬â¢s accomplishments, to inform the African American society that had lost one of its most valued members, and also to inspire young African Americans to take down the barriers of discrimination. During the time period, African Americans faced a great deal of inequality in healthcare, which made the work of Dr. Williams even more significant as he was considered a pioneer in equality of healthcare between races. All of the testimonies that were published were from citizens of Chicago, Illinois the city where the most notorious achievement of Dr. Williams was founded, the first African American hospital, Providence hospital. Dr. Dan Hale Williams illustrious achievements influenced many including influential African America n male leaders such as Dr. Ulysses Grant Daily, Dr. Carl G. Roberts, and attorney Ferdinand L. Barnett. The respect and gratitude the community felt towards Dr. Williams can be summarized in a quote from Dr. Carl G. Roberts who said: ââ¬Å"He was not merely a great Colored surgeon, but a great surgeon who happened to be Colored.â⬠This quote also exemplifies the intent behind the publication by the Chicago Defender to inspire young African Americans to fight against racism by following Dr. Williamsââ¬â¢ steps asShow MoreRelated Role of Espionage in American History Essay example2397 Words à |à 10 Pagesthe members were Sam and John Adams, John Hancock, James Otis, Dr. James Warren, Ben Churchill, and Paul Revere.
